Will there be hard disks with 20 TB in 2020?

Leading hard drive manufacturers Western Digital and Seagate are currently working at feverish speed to bring the first 20 TB hard drive to the consumer market.

Some data centers are already using Western Digital 20TB hard drives, but these models are not intended for the home computer. The current maximum is 18 TB for Western Digital and 16 TB for Seagate, with the 18 TB model scheduled for release in early September.

Those who want to own a 20TB hard disk will have to wait until the end of 2020 or maybe even 2021 when Seagate will release its first HAMR-based HDD. According to Seagate, this new technology will enable a huge leap forward and, after the 20TB mark, will eventually break the 30TB, 40TB and 50TB mark. So far, HAMR is already being tested by selected Seagate customers who have been provided with a corresponding 16 TB hard disk.
